The Lance Project is about the phenomenon of seeing familiar faces in foreign places. Seeing the back of someone's head and barely their profile on the subway and straining to look/not look like you are looking, because you are pretty sure it's not who you think it is, but you don't have enough evidence to rule it out. Then finally, he/she turns around and they have the wrong chin, or eyes... and your heart sinks a little.
The Project consists of images of young men who resemble in some small way my friend Lance. The images constitute a composite portrait of him. Though I knew Lance for eight years, he died without my ever having his photograph.
Mindy Tucker lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She carries a camera with her at all times.
