2. In the past I have talked about the importance of drawing. I still see drawing as very important to the process of making art, quite possibly the most important aspect of making art. Lately, when I think about drawing the Old Masters come to mind, in general the early Renaissance Italians who are sometimes referred to as the Primitives and Titian in particular. Titians use of color and contrast interests me, especially in the way he could make a painting glow by highlighting bright colors against a dark background or the Italian Primitives grayed out tones throughout paintings with a strong, bright accent. | In my new work Im trying to do something similar in both the physical construction of the work and how I paint it. The sculptures are low, no more than 2 feet high, and spread out. While the work and effort that goes into making the sculpture is tremendous, I see it as casual and less dependent on the engineering aspect of making welded steel sculpture and the clichs that accompany drawing in space.
