The Field will be exhibited in the John Moores Painting Prize 2012 at Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, 15 September 2012 to 6 January 2013.

‘The Field’ is one in a series of works made using found paintings as my starting point. In each case I responded to the image/object with some act of defacement. With this painting, my intervention exists on three formal planes: selecting this particular found canvas, whose fabric, age and patina roots it in both a temporal and physical background; a layering of black oil paint, semi-obscuring the original image; and floating glazed ceramic shapes, an acerbic yellow and sherbet orange, each contrasting with the duller hues still visible in the original painting which, in turn, are highlighted by the black. These coloured, glossy sentinels contain the painting, allowing (insisting upon) a dynamic vacillation between object and surface. The experience of looking at a painting is somewhat similar to engaging in a dialogue. A crucial factor in the process of making ‘The Field’ is that it was never, as far as I was concerned, a blank canvas. Rather, I entered into a pre-existing, albeit moribund, conversation, and experimented with a personal visual language. This hint at the nature of both intrapersonal and interpersonal communication engenders in me, and hopefully the viewer, an awareness of the human longing to be in empathic relationship.

'Composition' will be exhibited in the group show 'Now the Dream is Over' at Blyth Gallery, London, 10 October to 9 November 2012.

'Euphoria' and 'The Quandary' will be shown at Harris Lindsay in the exhibition 'Now and Then II', curated by Adrian Dannatt, 9 October to 26 October 2012.
