DAMIJAN KRACINA
WHITE AS DIRTY SNOW

October 23 November 7, 2008

Through his works at the exhibition White as Dirty Snow the multi-media artist and sculptor Damijan Kracina examines different degrees of dirt in dirty white. The rationale behind this research is that in spite of what aggressive advertising for washing agents tries to convince us of, white is never completely white. Since white is a combination of the entire colour spectrum, its shade/tone depends on the colours of the environment. Just as white always reflects something in its surroundings, a work of art always reflects another artwork. The artistic models for these works are combinations of the film Eraserhead (David Lynch, 1977), documentaries on the Animal Planet channel, the ceramic ready-made Fountain (Marcel Duchamp, 1917), and Damjan's former art projects, such as Galapagos and Specimen.

The main thread, white in this case, of Damjan Kracinas art projects is research into organic forms in relation to different environments. He has combined one of his favourite colours, white, and biomorphic forms to create animations, video works and a series of white installations with strange creatures in an intimate human environment and within the white gallery cube.

The content is communicated through notes made on the pieces: white - snow - ivory- toilet - bathroom -wellness - hygiene. With regard to how they are made, toiletries flirt with high-quality bathroom ceramics. Ivory ready to be shipped off and still on sale. The snow has acquired an interesting hue from air pollution. Animations reveal the process of sketching hypergenetic creatures with peculiar curves called bioon. All these forms of white are covered in different types of dirt.

If the viewers cannot get satisfaction from the open content of artworks, they can shake off their discomfort by reading the accompanying texts by the exhibitions curator, Jani Pirnat, who has written short stories inspired by the artworks.
